Me – Paula Cole

What happened to Paula Cole? She had a great career beginning in the late 90s after getting her first break singing with Peter Gabriel on the Secret World Live tour. The reason I was thinking about her, in fact, is because I’ve been listening to Secret World Live lately, and her vocals on it are simply incredible.

Turns out she left the music industry completely behind to raise her daughter. She came back in 2007 — without a record company — and has been recording and touring more and more it seems. The music I’ve heard from her 2007 album, Courage, is pretty great.

Here’s a recording of her singing Me a few months ago. She sounds great and the lyrics on this one are killer.

Paula Cole
This Fire (1996)
Me

i am not the person who is singing
i am the silent one inside
i am not the one who laughs at people’s jokes
i just pacify their egos
i am not my house or my car or my songs
they are only just stops along my way
i am like winter
i’m a dark cold female
with a golden ring of wisdom in my cave

CHORUS:
and it is me who is my enemy
me who beats me up
me who makes the monsters
me who strips my confidence

i am carrying my voice
i am carrying my heart
i am carrying my rhythm
i am carrying my prayers
but you can’t kill my spirit
it’s soaring and it’s strong
like a mountain
i go on and on
but when my wings are folded
the brightly colored moth
blends into the dirt into the ground

chorus

and it’s me who’s too weak
and it’s me who’s too shy
to ask for the thing i love
and it’s me who’s too weak
and it’s me who’s too shy
to ask for the thing i love
that i love (6 times)

i am walking on the bridge
i am over the water
and i’m scared as hell
but i know there’s something better
yes i know there’s something
yes i know, i know, yes i know

that i love (5 times overlapping chorus)

but it’s me
and it’s me
but it’s me (4 times)

I was walking in the park…

This one takes me back. It’s Marillion, Fish-era, performing the Misplaced Childhood album live. Lavender, the song below, was always one of my favorite Fish lyrics. The first verse is just so bloody evocative to me. Anyway, here’s the video (from the Loreley concert).

I was walking in the park dreaming of a spark
When I heard the sprinklers whisper
Shimmer in the haze of summer lawns
Then I heard the children singing
They were running through the rainbows
They were singing a song for you
Well it seemed to be a song for you
The one I wanted to write for you, for you

Lavenders blue, dilly dilly, lavenders green
When I am King, dilly dilly, you will be Queen
A penny for your thoughts my dear
A penny for your thoughts my dear
I.O.U. for your love, IOU for your love

Lavenders green, dilly dilly, lavenders blue
When you love me, dilly dilly, I will love you
A penny for your thoughts my dear
A penny for your thoughts my dear
IOU for your love, IOU for your love

For your love

Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer

This is one of the better mash-ups I’ve seen. Worth the five or so minutes spent watching it.

This kitten is adorable

Seriously, the sounds this kitten makes as it eats broccoli are just the cutest damned thing!

Hard to believe it’s been 28 years

I remember very well where I was when I heard the news (today, oh boy) that John Lennon had been murdered. I’d been out gaming and drinking with some friends and had just gotten home and was changing my clothes when I heard the DJ on WHCN in Hartford say that John Lennon was dead. While I’d always enjoyed the Beatles, I wasn’t as die-hard about them as many of my friends were, but I appreciated their place in the greater scheme of modern music. I couldn’t believe John was dead.

The older I get, the more I realize just how great a loss this was. The music we were cheated from hearing by Mark David Chapman is unknowable. Sean was left fatherless, and Yoko without her husband.  Weird though, that today, of all the December 8ths since that fateful night in 1980, I’m actually feeling John’s loss.

With that, I’ll leave you with this.

Hayden Panettiere PSA: Vote for McCain

He’s just like George Bush, except older and with a worse temper.

NSFW due to language. It’s very well done.

I Miss This Band

Really, there’s never been another band quite like them.

Everything That is Wrong About Sarah Palin…

..here, last night, in Saturday Night Live’s opening skit with Tina Fey playing Palin and Amy Poehler playing Hillary.

I haven’t talked about this at all, but plan on doing so very soon. Sad to say, my political blogging may be returning a smidge.

The Front Fell Off

If you don’t laugh at this, you’re likely dead.

Mostly Autumn – Carpe Diem

This is from this past May in Edinburgh. Looks like almost the entire show might be up on Youtube. Gotta say, I like these prog-rockers.
