Gathered the grain and shared the wine…

Being pagan, Kim and I are more prone to celebrate Krismas over Christmas. We enjoy the trappings surrounding the mythology of Kris Kringle, and this makes perfect sense. We do our own quiet marking of the Solstice a few days prior, and then go large with Krismas Eve. This year, it was delightful.

Kim made some delicious ribeye steaks with blue cheese butter melting over them along with the caramelized onions, and some green beans for the side. What made the meal even better — hard to believe, as it tasted perfect — was the bottle of Wilridge 2003 Merlot we had with it. Very berry in taste, it was the perfect complement for the meal.

Afterwards, we settled in to watch Ralphie and his pursuit of the Red Ryder rifle of his dreams, as is our tradition. We also exchanged our gifts, which included for me a gorgeous Mah Jong set (which means we’ll finally learn how to play this  game other than solitaire on our computers!), Civilization IV and its expansions (which marks the first time we both gave each other identical gifts, as I got this for her), our traditional pajama swap, a lovely and comfortable-looking casual shirt, a book on Roman generals (In the Name of Rome, by Adrian Goldsworthy), some troll magnets and some playing cards with WW2 plane-spotting diagrams on them.

All in all, I’d say I made out like a bandit. :) Here’s hoping you all have a Merry Christmas, Bright Solstice, or whatever holiday you do or don’t celebrate.

“Went to the valley at harvest time,
gathered the grain and shared the wine
a noble truth, a joy sublime
peace will shine with the morning!”
