Phil Gingrey is a former OB-GYN, and still he defends Akin and Mourdock for their idiotic comments last year. And then he adds this particular bombshell to the mix:
“We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, “Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don’t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.”
When we were trying to conceive, that sort of statement was guaranteed to piss us off. Relaxation had nothing to do with our infertility — it was a medical condition. And yet, here’s a man who was a board-certified OB-GYN, saying just that.
A note to folks — if you’re looking for something to say in support of your infertile friends, don’t say “If you just relax, it’ll happen.” Because often, it won’t, and you’re just insulting your friends.
