As we roll into the month of September and leave summer behind us, Railroad Earth is gearing up for another big run across the country! The run starts this weekend on the East Coast with big shows in Washington, DC, Philadelphia and New York City!

As a special addition to these shows, Railroad Earth will be bringing out the great Black Swan Singers from Denver, CO to join us on all three shows!! Some of you may have seen them join us in June at the Ogden Theatre shows or at YarmonyGrass last month. But these gals can sing…and bring a uniquely spiritual vibe to many of the songs!

We also have the great band Everybodyfields supporting on these shows!

We hope you’ll join us at all three shows and help us kick off the Fall Tour!

Let’s go to the recent soundboard for some instrumental love. This time I’m singling out The Green Roofs of Eireann, John’s technically perfect Celtic piece that has become the new opening to Like a Buddha. I absolutely love this one, and everytime I hear it starting at a show, I get a huge grin on my face. At Morristown, I couldn’t help myself and let out a yelp around the 49 second mark. Kim was right behind me. You really can’t miss it on the tape…

Go ahead and click both Green Roofs and Buddha above, to give yourself the whole experience (or stream them from the first link). That show was a lot of fun and will be used for many Amen Corner song selections in the future.

By far one of my favorite shows, the 7.29.06 show at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park was one for the books. It was hot — really hot. The band was drenched in sweat, and so were we. It was the night of the epic six song encore. Jesse from the Hackensaw Boys sat in on Hunting Song with the haunting harmonica. Yeah, this was fun.

Yes, I know, it’s been a while since I posted. Life gets busy some times. Doesn’t mean I don’t love all five readers of this blog, though.

Anyway, today’s diversion is Bowling Green, from February 1, 2008. Those mid-winter shows at Mexicali Blues were a hoot to be at, not in the least because some amazing music was played. In this case, Papa Phil got to write the set-list as it was his birthday, and he slipped Bowling Green in for Silent Mark. Rarely played these days, I think it’s actually only been played three times total since October 2006. It’s a shame, as it’s a fantastic tune, played by many, including The Everly Brothers, Glen Campbell, and even Sarah Brightman (that one surprised me, I can assure you).

One of the reasons I love this song so much is Andy’s rapidfire flat-picking on the guitar. It drives the song and really is special.

Ahh, Bird in a House. One of Todd’s simpler but extremely deep, lyrical songs. Not only was it the title of the band’s second album, it was also featured prominently on ELKO. This version, from Floyd Fest in 2004, featured Jeff Miller of New Monsoon on guest guitar, beginning a long collaboration with Timmy and the band. Tim’s been out west to play as featured guest at some Monsoon shows in San Francisco, and always brings it when he does. The video below is another of Jeff Saltzman’s gems which he’s uploading on Youtube. Enjoy! Again, select High Quality for the best version.

Something a little different today — both an audio and a video of Todd Sheaffer performing Passing Through at the Historic Blairstown Theater back on May 31st. This song is simply beautiful and drives home why I love Todd so much.

The video is courtesy once again of Jeff Saltzman, who told me he’s going to be opening up his video vault on youtube with a lot of rare stuff. Meanwhile, throw open the windows, sit back and listen to this beautiful song on the first day of Summer.
